Papers II, 1874-1960.

An unprocessed collection of papers of Charles Pelham Curtis, lawyer and writer. Included are correspondence, literary manuscripts, and family papers. Some of the papers Curtis kept as Special Assistant to Under Secretary of State Sumner Welles in 1941 are included, as are Curtis's notes, clippings, and writings on civil rights issues in the 1950s. The manuscripts, notes, and correspondence relating to his book The Oppenheimer case (1955), which examines nuclear scientist Robert J. Oppenheimer's loss of a government security clearance, are also included. Other papers include correspondence, diaries, and miscellaneous papers of Curtis's father, Charles Pelham Curtis.

Benjamin Sumner Welles (1892-1961) graduated from Harvard University in 1914 and began his diplomatic career in 1915 as Secretary of the United States Embassy in Tokyo. From 1917 to 1919 he served in a similar post in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was Assistant Chief of the Latin American Affairs Division of the Department of State from 1920 to 1921, and Chief of the Division from 1921 to 1922.
